Runny nose, sore throat, watery eyes, and a cough. Fever, aches, pains, and decreased appetite. Sound familiar? Is it a cold? A sinus infection? Actually, the symptoms of the common cold and a sinus infection are very similar, and both require both common sense (ie. rest, proper diet) and medical solutions to alleviate the problem.
Since only 2% of respiratory infections are caused by bacteria, patients need not rush to get a prescription for antibiotics because they generally won’t help you get better, and can increase your chance of antibiotics resistance over time. So, then, what is an ailing person supposed to do?
Adults, seek urgent care if:
Your symptoms have lingered for several weeks.
Your fever is higher than 104F, or not responding to over-the-counter medicines.
Your symptoms are keeping you from resting.
For children, seek urgent care if:
Your child seems to be having difficulty breathing clearly.
Symptoms are preventing them from sleeping and over-the-counter medicine is not providing relief.
Your child is running a fever which isn’t lower with the use of ibuprofen or acetaminophen.
The upside is that if you do have a sinus infection, it’s not generally contagious. so you don’t have to isolate yourself from the rest of the family. Many colds pass on their own, but if you’re worried for any reason, please do not hesitate to contact Urgent Care of Florida to help get you back on the road to recovery.
