What Are IV Infusions?
Intravenous therapy (IV therapy) is the infusion of liquid substances – medicine, vitamins, etc – directly into a vein.
Feeding essential nutrients, vitamins and minerals directly into a patient’s bloodstream bypasses the digestive system instantly placing the substances into circulation. This is a huge advantage over oral medication because there the medication or nutrients have to be processed through the stomach and the intestines, potentially rendering them inactive and idle in the digestive tract. Additionally, they may not be properly absorbed by the intestines severely limiting their effect by “watering them down.”
Intravenous infusions are also called “drips” because many techniques use a drip chamber which prevents air from entering the blood stream (air embolism) and allows for a controlled flow rate.
Several health concerns and conditions can be helped by IV infusions including: hypertension, COPD, asthma, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, diabetes, hepatitis, dehydration, and chemotherapy.
IV Infusions Preparation in Tampa
It’s good to know how to come prepared to receive your IV infusion therapy in Tampa.
- Be hydrated. Drink plenty of water to be sure you are well hydrated during the therapy session.
- Be comfortable. You’re going to be in the office for a bit, so wearing comfortable clothes is a good idea. Plus, your vital signs (blood pressure, heart rate, breathing rate) will be periodically checked, so it makes things easier if you have loose-fitting clothes for the medical staff to do so unencumbered.
- Bring a list. Notify the doctor of all the medications (OTC or prescription) that you’re on, plus any allergies you may have, and your emergency contact information.
